Chapter Sixteen

Vanessa sat in the living room with her son Junior and her grandson Brenden while Icy took a nap. She wore a bright smile because her virtual therapy session really helped her see how far she had come in regards to her battle with postpartum depression. Breeze stepped out of the home, leaving the ladies alone for the day. Vanessa was extremely proud of herself, the battle she faced with postpartum depression wasn’t for the weak but there she was, alone with two infants.

Since Vanessa returned home, she was caring for Junior with minimal assistance from Breeze and Icy. Although she didn’t feel comfortable going home alone with the baby, she was confident that the day was coming. Breeze and Icy were such integral parts of her life and she was extremely appreciative of them for their non judgemental support. Her phone rang on the coffee table between the sleeping infants and Vanessa lunged forward quickly, hoping to silence it before the boys woke up.

Glancing at the contact information on the incoming call, anxiety took over Vanessa. She hadn’t conversed with her husband since she took off and left her newborn baby home with Icy and Breeze. Every time that she thought about speaking with Israel a sense of dread consumed her. Vanessa and Israel had been together since the age of fifteen and had Icy at sixteen. Coming up in the streets as teenagers with a daughter to take care of, the couple went through a lot and Vanessa never folded on him. She was embarrassed to face her partner in crime because she felt like she folded on him at that moment.

During her therapy session that day, Vanessa actually brought that topic up to her therapist. Dr. Ken encouraged Vanessa to speak with Israel but she still didn’t feel like she was ready. Pressing the decline button, Vanessa slid the side button down to place the iPhone on silent before repositioning it on the coffee table. Brenden stirred from his sleep, emitting a low cry, capturing Vanessa’s attention.

“Hey Yaya baby boy,” Vanessa cooed, lifting him out of the bassinet. The sound of Icy’s bedroom door signaled that she was up and her slippers colliding with the hardwood floors let Vanessa know that she was headed in their direction. “Your mommy must have spidey senses because she is on her way down here before I could wake her up and tell her that you’re hungry.”

Brenden smacked his tiny lips together and began fussing.

“Ma, the phone is for you,” Icy called out as she skipped down the stairs.

Vanessa took a deep breath because she knew that it was Israel calling. He continued to call and text her off of the phone that Breeze smuggled into the prison for him. When Vanessa failed to respond to him, Israel reverted to contacting her from the prison phone, yielding the same results. Icy confronted Vanessa about the lack of communication with Israel but her mother changed the subject. However, Icy couldn’t let
